Starting a YouTube channel is tough till you do this
Whether you are a new YouTuber or you’re considering starting a channel, I congratulate you for finding this post. YouTube has changed, and its getting tougher than those super-big YouTubers portray it to be, and they seem out of touch with your reality as a new or small Youtuber. When I first started, I thought the algorithm would automatically promote my videos to the right audience, but I quickly realised there’s a lot more I needed to do to get monetised and have more views. Here are some tips that helped me get ahead and can help you too.
One of the biggest challenges is figuring out what kind of content will resonate with your audience. When I launched my second channel, I had no idea what would work. I uploaded a few videos, but the engagement was all over the place. It was frustrating not knowing what my viewers wanted to see .
Here’s what I did to make my 3rd channel hit the ground running:
- Launch with 5 Videos in Slightly Different Formats: I started by uploading five videos, each with a slightly different format. One was a tutorial, another was a vlog, and so on within the niche I designated the channel to. This helped me see which type of content my audience preferred and helped Youtube get enough data fast to figure out who my content is for. For example, my tutorial videos got way more views and comments than my vlogs, so I knew to focus more on tutorials.
- Combine Work with YouTube: Batch Produce Your Content: Balancing my busy job and multiple YouTube channels is no joke. I found that batch producing my content was a game-changer. I write scripts on my phone when free at any place at any time, then spend one weekend or evening shooting and editing multiple videos. This way, I had a backlog of content ready to go. I upload them all and schedule them with different dates, which made it easier to stick to a consistent upload schedule. Plus, scripting on the run helped me capture spontaneous ideas that kept my content fresh.
- Use Twitter & Google Trends to Research Searchable Content: To attract more viewers, I started using Google Trends to find out what people were searching for. This tool helped me identify trending topics and keywords, making my videos more discoverable. For instance, I noticed a spike in searches for “Credit Cards to make international payments in Nigeria,” so I created a video on that, which ended up being one of my most popular uploads.
- Follow a Proven Structure: Intro/Hook — Problem — Solution — Outro/CTA: A well-structured video can make a huge difference. I have started following a simple format:
- Intro/Hook: Grab attention quickly.
- Problem: State the issue or topic.
- Solution: Offer valuable insights or tips.
- Outro/CTA: Encourage viewers to like, comment, and subscribe.
This structure keeps my videos organised and engaging, which helps retain viewers.
