Upwork new feature: Increasing your hourly rate

Upwork has introduced a new feature, and I’ve taken a moment to ponder whether I will smash this or simply pass. After a bit of thought, here’s my recommendation to freelancers.

If your pre-contract interactions with the client have fostered a strong sense of trust and you’re confident they won’t walk away, then using this feature may be advantageous. However, if there’s a higher risk of losing the client, I’d advise against it. But let’s not forget that the decision to utilize this feature should also factor in the project’s unique characteristics, industry norms, and other relevant considerations.

As for me, I lean toward commencing the contract at the initially agreed-upon rate, avoiding any additional hurdles in client conversion. I find it more effective to negotiate for a higher hourly rate after the client has firsthand experience of my exceptional work, possibly six months or even years down the line.

Now, I’d love to hear your thoughts on this feature. What’s your take?
