Interview Questions.
- Kindly introduce yourself to our audience.
My name is Sunday Abegunde, a versatile Content Strategist.
I strategize and manage content for brands.
I write content for personal and organisational brands.
My USP is that I also design graphics content
I work on video content—video editing.
I use freelance platforms as a market that connects me to my client.
2. Tell us, how did you launch a career in freelancing?
To start a freelance career, two things are key.
The skill
The platforms (to meet clients).
How I launched my skills:
I wrote my first book in 2010 and published it on a commercial scale in 2014.
I piqued my interest in designing when my book cover was designed in my presence.
I piqued my interest in the digital market in my quest to market my book online.
Content Strategy is the marriage of Content Writing and Digital Marketing.
How I launched on platforms:
I started with getting gigs on Facebook, then Fiverr in 2014 — Upwork in 2019 — Then other amazing platforms like SourceInBusiness
3. What is content?
Content is the information (contained within communication media).
Forms: Text, Still graphics, Motion Graphics, Slides, Videos.
Content is king because it is the oxygen of the new age — Content is the future. Content is the history of the past and the expression and documentation of the present.
4. What are the relationships between content writing and design?
They are both forms of expressing information.
One is in text form, the other is in visual form.
Design is not about aesthetics only, it is about function.
Writing is not about sounding clever, it is about function i.e the objectives.
They are both contents.
5. Do you agree with the view that ‘Creative Writers’ are born?
No. The mind of a child is like a Tabula rasa —plain. Content Writing is a skill. As with any other skill, it can be learned, it can be improved on. This learning can be by self, a mentor, the environment or academics or professional courses
6. Who is a content creator?
Content creation is the contribution of information to any media for an audience or user in specific contexts. The dominant medium now is digital media.
7. How did you achieve Top Rated Plus status as a freelancer?
- By using my USP to give clients excellence.
- By building friendly relationships with clients to keep contracts long-term.
- By leveraging multiple platforms and doing client crossovers
- By leveraging LinkedIn
- By leveraging readers of my book who turn into friends
- By constant learning and implementing what I learn on every platform I use
8. What’s your advice to those who want to venture into freelancing?
- Hone your skill. That is the commodity you sell in the marketplace called freelancing.
- Treat every client like a king. One client can be the answer to your entire freelancing career.
- Leverage multiple freelance platforms.
- Never stop improving your skills and learning about freelancing
- Have mentors and network with freelancers
9. What’s your view of remote work for African Freelancers?
We have a history of slavery and racism. As remote workers and freelancers, we still experience this today. Some platforms are way more difficult for African freelancers. Some companies and clients will not work with you or pay you way less simply because you are African.
- Freelance is advocacy for freedom!
- Financial freedom,
- freedom from non-essentials enforced in 9–5,
- freedom to prioritise productivity
- Freedom to allocate your time
- Freedom for work-life balance
