Do you want to increase your chances of getting jobs on Upwork and beat the competition? A good JSS will help you, as it is one of the metrics most clients use to determine whether to hire you or not.

As a Top Rated Plus freelancer, I have worked on Upwork for years, and now my JSS remains 100%. I work with new and old clients, nice and not-so-nice clients, but my JSS never drops. My name is Sunday Abegunde

In this post, I will share with you some tips to get a high Upwork JSS and maintain it.

JSS is Upwork’s metric to measure your client’s satisfaction with your overall work performance on the platform. It captures a specific timeframe, and Upwork doesn’t reveal the exact calculation for your JSS, but they look at it this way:

(successful contract outcomes — negative contract outcomes) / total outcomes

With a good JSS, you stand a higher chance of getting new jobs than with a low JSS of less than 80%.

Let me know in the comment here what your first JSS on Upwork is.

As for me, I struggled with a 74% JSS in my first few months on Upwork. Why? I will share this specific story of how I overturned that later in this post.

Take these 10 Ideas to Maintain a High JSS.

10. Select your clients very carefully.

Submit proposals only for jobs you’re sure you have the skills for. Accept only invitations you have the skills for and are available to deliver within the time expected by the client.

9. Underpromise and over-deliver.

If you promise 5 and deliver an 8. You over-delivered. That’s healthy for your JSS; if you promise clients 10 and deliver 8, that is an overpromise. Clients will give you less than an excellent private review, and that will hurt your JSS.

8. Set clear expectations with clients.

Be specific about the value you’ll add and how at the talking stage. I know how amazing the excitement of getting a new offer on Upwork can be; ensure you are on the same page with the client in terms of expectations.

Before we move on to Number 7, please hit the LIKE button if you haven’t. I’d count down from 5 to 1 for you to quickly do that. 5—4—3—2—1—go level up! Level up! Level up Level up!

7. Be quick to deliver.

This is a very big selling point in freelancing. Clients will appreciate your service more if you have a quick turnaround time without compromising on quality.

6. Keep your client updated.

In reality, you might have some trouble delivering on a deadline if something happens, for example, laptop issues, a family emergency, etc. It’s best to contact clients as soon as possible. You can ask for more time.

5. Request a review.

Upwork is more forgiving about having too many contracts with no feedback now than before, and having reviews and 5-star ratings surely helps your JSS.

Many clients, even when they are satisfied with your service, may not be inclined to write you a review by default. So, ask politely and insinuate the exact rating you want, which is an all-5-star review. This only works if you deliver satisfactory service to the client. Don’t forget a client can give you 5 of 5 stars in a public review and give you 1 of 5 stars rating in private or a poor recommendation.

4. Offer a complementary service or value.

Check on the clients. Show true concern for that business they just started. Ask how that child’s birthday went after you designed for the party. Stuff like that. Anything to build a personal relationship with your client and convert them into long-term clients. I observed long-term clients

3. Remove bad review

Poor reviews on your profile send a bad signal to your clients. You can use your top-rated perk to remove one bad feedback. If you are not top-rated yet, watch the videos by coming back to click the link above to learn secrets that will help you become top-rated so you can do this.

2. Close the completed contracts.

Clients often don’t bother to close contracts. After review. Ask clients to close the contract, except they’re likely to have another job for you within the next few weeks/months. Remind them they can always open a new contract anytime they need your service.

1. Earn from every contract.

In spite of doing your best, a project can go south due to many factors. Avoid giving a 100% refund if that will be fair to the client and to you. Persuade the client to let you have a percentage for your attempt, even if it’s 1%.

Now to the story, I promised to share. The very first job I accepted was a 2D Infographic job. according to the description but when I submitted the client said he intended to have a 3D. I don’t do 3D. I gave a full refund and that hurts my JSS. Luckily, before I delivered that job, I had another contract in the pipeline, which became my first retainer client and compensated for other contract which hurt my JSS. I got one 5-star review every week from the new client for 4 weeks straight.

Hence, if your JSS is currently not as high as you want it, you can still get new contracts in spite of that. Overdeliver on new projects you get. Watch my other video on how to get Upwork projects. The bad review will fade away over a 16–18-week period after you get a new set of 5-star reviews.
